The Right Hobby Train For The Right Space

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

The right hobby train for the right space should be the mantra of choice when it comes to a model railroad. Going with one of these railroads is about more than picking a good historical era for the train to reflect, as a matter of fact.

One of the prime considerations will have to be the amount of space a person has in which to put down track and set up a realistic-looking model railroad environment. In hobby trains, it’s all about size and how it can be utilized. So if there’s not a lot of space, it could be smarter to go with smaller.

The sizes that trains come in are referred to as their “scale.” And their scales are a way to equate the small size of the hobby train to the actual size of the trains they resemble. An ‘N’ scale train is made in a 1:160 ratio, which is a tiny train, indeed. Train enthusiasts know, though, that perhaps a better indicator for size, the same as real trains, is gauge or width of the track on which the train rides.

Right now you can’t go anywhere without hearing about Bakugan Toys. Children love this game and stores can’t even keep them in stock. A surefire hit this xmas 2009 is going to be Bakugan for sure. Do you want to learn more about why they are such a hit?

The origin of this sensation is the cartoon by the same name. It features Bakugan monsters from another world traveling to earth to find help. So that they will be protected they disguise themselves as small balls and entrusted themselves to children. With the special cards and their new toys children quickly invented a new game that became an international sensation. But something deeper was going on underneath the surface as the children soon found out.

In season 1 a team of kids called the Bakugan Battle Brawlers had to defend Earth. The evil Naga was trying to become the ultimate Bakugan by taking over both the silent core and the infinity core. These are two key components to Vestroia which is the universe all these creatures came from. If that happened he would rule both universes and crush any who opposed him. Together with their guardians the Battle Brawlers and all their friends defeated Naga and set the universe right again.

Mexican Train Dominos, Blokus, Apples to Apples: Fun Family Games

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Our family game night was one I looked forward to when I was younger. We all would pull up a chair around our kitchen table, make ice cream floats and play cards. It was a great time together.

Being a busy family of 6, we tended to go our separate ways a lot. So this was instrumental in reconnecting with each other. Because my husband’s family had the same fun times, we decided before we started our family to also implement this activity too.

As is common with childhood memories, you don’t see the problems involved in making such activities happen. We quickly realized that the age difference between our oldest and youngest (7 years) posed a problem in finding a game that both could play and enjoy.

A Few Ideas

So you weren’t really expecting me to not have a few ideas here, were you? I do. Starting with the game we learned on our last family vacation - Mexican Train Dominoes. We all could play it together - important with the size of our family - and it was fun. Plus the dominoes rules for Mexican Train aren’t hard to learn. We did find after buying the inexpensive game that the rules in the game were not the same as the ones we learned. Find the “Hellstrom” domino rules on the website listed below.

My older daughter has a different style doll bed for her American Girl. We had previously purchased a similar bed from the American Girl Company, and although pleased with that product, we were looking for a more reasonable way to add a second doll bed.

I purchased this doll bed for my middle daughter’s American Girl. A really good choice for a wooden doll bed and she loves playing dolls with it. It looks adorable next to a doll bed like a bunk bed or any desk and can be used to put little trinkets inside the drawer.
